How To Solve “Product Information Not Valid” Issue In HP Laptop
If your HP laptop shows the error:
"Product Information Not Valid"
during BIOS updates, HP utilities, BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU), or hardware diagnostics, the issue is usually related to corrupted or missing DMI / SMBIOS information inside the motherboard firmware.
This is one of the most common problems after:
- BIOS corruption
- Motherboard replacement
- SPI flashing
- NVRAM erase
- EC firmware repair
- Wrong BIOS programming
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
What Is DMI / SMBIOS Information?
HP laptops store machine identity information inside the BIOS DMI region.
This includes:
- Serial Number
- Product Name
- Product Number (SKU)
- UUID
- Feature Byte
- Build ID
- CT Number
- System Board ID
If these values are erased or corrupted, HP tools cannot verify the machine identity anymore.
That causes errors like:
Code:
Product Information Not Valid
Machine is not configured
System Board CT Number Invalid
Feature Byte Missing
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Common Causes
- Replacing motherboard without DMI programming
- Flashing clean BIOS dump without transferring original DMI
- Corrupted NVRAM region
- Wrong EC/BIOS combination
- Using BIOS from another machine
- Factory data erased during repair
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Method 1 — Try HP BIOS Configuration Utility (BCU) First
BCU is the safest solution when DMI fields are still partially readable.
Export Current BIOS Information
Run Command Prompt as Administrator and execute:
Code:
BiosConfigUtility64.exe /Get:Config.txt
Open Config.txt and verify fields such as:
- Serial Number
- SKU
- Product Name
- UUID
If fields are editable, correct them using values from the laptop sticker.
Then write back:
Code:
BiosConfigUtility64.exe /Set:Config.txt
Reboot and verify in BIOS Setup (F10).
⚠ Important
BCU cannot repair fully erased or locked DMI regions.
If values stay blank after reboot, you must use HP DMI programming tools.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Method 2 — Use HP DMI Programming Tools
HP provides multiple generations of DMI tools.
Different notebook generations and ODM manufacturers use different utilities.
Main tools include:
- WNDMIFIT
- NbDmiFit
- HP DMIFIT
- HPSetCFG
- BrandIT
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Understanding HP ODM Manufacturers
HP does not manufacture all motherboards directly.
Different ODM vendors build different HP platforms.
Each family may require different DMI utilities.
| Prefix | ODM Manufacturer |
|---|---|
| HPBC | Compal |
| HPBQ | Quanta |
| HPBW | Wistron |
| HPBI | Inventec |
| HPBFO | Foxconn |
| HPBFL | Flextronics |
| HPBP | Pegatron |
Example:
Code:
HPBQ174.exe
→ Quanta-based HP motherboard utility.
Code:
HPBC335.exe
→ Compal-based HP motherboard utility.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Which Version Should You Use?
There is no universal version that works on all HP laptops.
General guideline:
| Tool | Recommended Usage |
|---|---|
| NbDmiFit 1.x | Older HP laptops (2007–2012)</TD] |
| NbDmiFit 2.x | Mid-generation HP platforms</TD] |
| WNDMIFIT | Business HP models after 2011</TD] |
| HP DMIFIT | Legacy mixed platforms</TD] |

Recommended stable releases:
- NbDmiFit 1.14D
- NbDmiFit 1.15
- NbDmiFit 1.18
- NbDmiFit 1.19
- NbDmiFit 2.07
- NbDmiFit 2.10
- NbDmiFit 2.12
- NbDmiFit 2.13
- NbDmiFit 2.14-1
- WNDMIFIT
⚠ Important
Some modern HP G3/G4/G5/G6 models may reject older NbDmiFit versions completely.
In those cases:
- Use WNDMIFIT
- Use correct Feature Byte
- Verify MPM status
- Check Intel AMT / AT configuration
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
NbDmiFit 2.14-1 EFI Method
Newer versions like NbDmiFit 2.14-1 use EFI boot mode.
Basic Procedure
- Extract package to FAT32 USB drive
- Enable EFI Boot Mode in BIOS
- Boot USB from F9 Boot Menu
- Run startup.nsh
- Choose VPRO or Non-VPRO configuration
- Commit AMT / AT data
- Lock descriptor
- Reboot system
If successful, you should see:
Code:
Pass!!! This machine is configured
Then disable EFI boot mode again if necessary.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Important Repair Notes
- Always backup original BIOS before repair
- Never use random Feature Byte values
- Wrong UUID may break OEM activation
- Wrong SKU may break HP driver detection
- Feature Byte mismatch can disable hardware functions
- Some systems require MPM unlock before programming
- Some EliteBook models additionally verify Intel AMT state
⚠ Warning
Incorrect DMI programming may result in:
- Missing wireless devices
- Battery detection problems
- Touchpad malfunction
- HP Support Assistant failures
- Windows OEM activation issues
- BIOS update failures
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Conclusion
The “Product Information Not Valid” error is usually not caused by Windows.
It is a motherboard firmware identity problem caused by missing or corrupted HP DMI information.
The correct solution depends on:
- Laptop generation
- ODM manufacturer
- BIOS generation
- MPM lock status
- Intel AMT/VPRO support
For simple cases, HP BCU may be enough.
For deeper firmware repairs, professional DMI tools such as:
- WNDMIFIT
- NbDmiFit
- HP DMIFIT
are required to fully restore motherboard identity data.
